Founder's Story: The Journey of Local Impact Hub
Hello! I’m Devi Pillai.
I’d like to share the story of how Local Impact Hub came to be, driven by a passion for community development and a vision for social equity.
The Catalyst: Early Influences
Growing up in different parts of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Kerala, I was exposed to a rich diversity of cultures and communities. This unique upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for the power of community and the importance of supporting one another. However, I also witnessed significant challenges, including health disparities and a lack of resources. These experiences sparked my desire to make a difference.
My Academic Journey
My academic journey began at Kerala University of Health Sciences in India, where I pursued a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). Here, I not only learned about the intricacies of the human body but also about the social determinants of health, recognising that true well-being extends beyond medical treatment to include the health of the community as a whole.
Transitioning to Public Health
My experiences in medical school led me to explore the field of public health, where I could address the root causes of health issues within communities. This path took me to the University of Aberdeen in the UK, where I earned a Master’s in Public Health. During my time in Aberdeen, I engaged in health systems research, policy analysis, and worked on impactful projects such as a national report on drug-related harm reduction for Public Health Scotland.
The Birth of Local Impact Hub
The idea for Local Impact Hub emerged from my realisation that sustainable change requires empowering communities from within. I envisioned a platform that would not only provide resources and support but also inspire and mobilise communities to take charge of their own development.
Building the Platform
In 2023, I moved to Leeds, bringing with me a wealth of knowledge and a strong desire to make a positive impact. Local Impact Hub is a blog, but is looking forward to growing into a dynamic platform for community leaders, non-profit professionals, and passionate individuals.
